My Mum Tracy Beaker: What the Must Watch reviewers think

Every week, the Must Watch podcasters review the biggest TV and streaming shows.

This week, Scott Bryan and Hayley Campbell share their thoughts on My Mum Tracy Beaker on BBC iplayer.

The latest series follows a grown up Tracy (Dani Harmer) and her daughter Jess.

Hayley says: "Its popularity is baffling to me"

“I was in my senior year at high school when Tracy Beaker started, so I never watched it originally and don’t come to this show with any pre-existing love. I was trying to judge it on its own. Whatever magic people see in it I do not see! I think it’s horribly written, horribly acted and cannot see any redeeming features.

“But I know it’s not made for me. All I can report is that it doesn’t stand alone on its own merit if you haven’t seen the original Tracy Beaker. Its popularity is baffling to me.”

Scott says: "Bringing it back was a great idea"

"This has been such a smash hit for CBBC. They even said it was their 'most successful show' ever. I think that has a lot to do with the number of adults tuning in.

"The mini-series plot goes at breakneck speed. (Stop reading now if you don't want spoilers) We see Tracy working in a cafe, to dating a footballer, to being proposed to by him... all within 30 minutes! They only go on one date before the proposal and half of the date consists of them arguing. Whilst us adults might be frustrated at this lack of realism, I think this sort of pace for kids shows is quite typical.

"I do love seeing many of the cast reprising their roles and handing this show onto the next generation. Whilst I do wonder whether the younger generation will be as much of a fan as the adult lot, I think bringing it back was a great idea. I also love how it manages to talk about important issues to kids too - from growing up with a limited income, to having closure with your issues from your past."
