Frank of Ireland: What the Must Watch reviewers think

Every week, the Must Watch podcasters review the biggest TV and streaming shows.

This week Hayley Campbell and Scott Bryan share their thoughts on Frank of Ireland. Real life brothers Domhnall and Brian Gleeson star in the comedy about a 32-year-old musician who lives with his mother in Dublin. Normal People’s Sarah Greene also stars.

Scott says: “Throwing every single joke at the wall”

"It’s a bit uneven. You believe the jokes between the main characters because they are brothers in real life, and that chemistry is really there, but sometimes the slapstick works well and other times, it just doesn’t. It feels as if they are throwing every single joke at the wall, hoping that some of them stick. The more I was watching the show the more I got frustrated.

“It’s a surprising change of tone compared to their previous work - people will be quite surprised to see them going into this type of humour. It is also just fascinating to look at the reaction, just seeing how divided people are about it. Some people absolutely love it, others absolutely loathe it. There is nobody in the middle."

Hayley says: “Definitely fun to watch”

"It’s very funny and silly and it has a high gag count per minute. It won’t be one of those shows that changes the world or that makes you re-think your life but it’s definitely fun to watch.

"I think opinions will be divided as the whole premise of this is a man-baby still living with his mother, and it's not territory we're unfamiliar with — we’ve reviewed loads of shows about grown men failing to do anything of use in life, and mostly they are forgettable. I think that will turn a lot of people off immediately, but hear me out: they have the best Irish accents. I can't help but love them."
