Must Watch reviews Wreck

Every week, the Must Watch podcasters review the biggest TV and streaming shows.

This week, Hayley Campbell and Scott Bryan review Wreck.

BBC Three shows the six-part series about life on a nightmare cruise liner where there's always filled conspiracy, comedy and a hint of slasher moments.

Hayley says "The show has a very particular aesthetic so I think the design is memorable"

It's not for me. It’s fine, but it's sort of forgettable nonsense. The horror bits were directed with no tension so even those bits were forgettable. Thaddea Graham was great, but she's always great. The show has a very particular aesthetic so I think the design, at least, is memorable.

As for the show itself, it didn’t really land heavily enough either as a comedy or a horror, so it’s sort of hanging in the middle, not doing all that much. I think you can do horror and comedy together: Shaun Of The Dead being a great example of that. I think in terms of horror just on BBC Three, ‘Red Rose’ was a better series, and I think that one’s aimed at a similar demographic, so I would be going for that one.

Scott says "The fact that they decided to sprinkle lots of humour and unconventional twists and turns in this makes it all the more delightful"

I absolutely loved this. I loved it from the opening line; when a character says “you’re a walking cloud of Lynx Africa” to her ex.

The style of the show feels very BBC Three, but that is not a bad thing. Tonally it feels pretty original. I mean, the murderer is someone in a duck costume. It doesn't get much more original than that.

I love the setting. I haven’t seen many thrillers set on a cruise ship before but it makes perfect sense because of the dynamics between the crew vs the public. I was on a cruise actually a few months ago and I wondered how much of a good time you have if you are not a holidaymaker. You’d be away from your friends and family for weeks, months, maybe years at a time.

The fact that they decided to sprinkle lots of humour and unconventional twists and turns in this makes it all the more delightful. I’ve reviewed so many thrillers over the last year that take themselves so seriously and it just ends up being a bit boring and conventional.

I like the fact that this takes everything that’s in everywhere else and just goes “you know what, let's do it our own way”.

Wreck is available now on BBC Three.

Must Watch is released as a podcast every Monday evening from BBC Sounds and all other good podcast providers.

This week, the team also review Sky Atlantic's This England and The Walk-In on ITV.
