5 live: Sony nominations

The coverage of the Ryder Cup on the Monday was brilliant and deserves an award. The Coalition coverage was also very good. These were two examples of the type of broadcasting people expect from 5Live. No nominations for the current daytime schedules between 12 and 4pm then?

Good to see The Ryder Cup on 5 live nominated, excellent coverage from all including John Inverdale and Clare Balding

The Cheltenham coverage was also first class.

Such a shame that the best broadcaster on 5live never seems to get a nomination and that is of course the great Rhod Sharp.Strange also that AVK omitted to mention that Robbie Savage is up for the Rising Star Award !

Let's be clear about this. You nominate people and programmes, yes? At £85 a pop.



Agree about Rhod, the most consistent presenter/reporter on the station.

I have never found nominating your own presenters and paying very palatable.Rhod is by far and away a better presenter than any of those mentioned.

Hello Nigel. Do you only enter programmes from the main high audience programmes? Livesey has done very well in his spot, no nomination? I doubt anyone has a bad word about Rhod, no nomination? These two actually anchor a time slot which you have ignored for a good while in working out what you are going to nominate. I am afraid although I agree with many of your nominations, the awful Robbie Savage needs to be dropped, not lauded.

Everyone eventually gets a Sony ( Nolan, Gaunt etc.), you just have to wait your turn when your mates will vote you one. It's cyclical; that's why VD, Talksport, Ferrari are unlikely to miss out.

Sports coverage on 5live is excellant, listening to talkSPORT the other day i was reminded how great 5lives coverage is.



Drive is excellant as well.



It is almost guaranteed that 5live will pick up loads of awards.

The golf coverage on fivelive is often excellent with Jay Townsend and Iain Carter being very good so I am not surprised it has got a mention. Well done fivelive. Although there has been a small step backwards with Andrew Cotter often joining the team. He seems to think he will look clever if he repeats what Jay Townsend has said about half an hour later...

Re post 10. There does seem to be an element of the ' In Crowd ' mentality with these awards.Not that I lose too much sleep about who the winners might be.

I understand that Adrian Van-Klaveren is a judge for the Sony Radio awards.

I'm really hoping the R5L win ZERO awards. This is one of the vilest radio stations in the UK and if the judges had any sense, they would make sure that none of the winners come from R5L.

Well, all I will say is that my doctor tells me that my health has improved tremendously since I stopped listening to R5L. I used to wake up to it and would be boiling mad even before breakfast. Now, I wake to some beautiful music from a far away radio station and I'm in a much better state. I would encourage everyone to try this.

No need to worry about being boiling mad first thing, Rachel's voice is so inaudible you won't hear what she is saying until her vocal chords warm up. But seriously, you are right, each to their own and good luck.

I see Mark Kermode is nominated in the "On-Air Contributer" category but surely he's more than that. The show is called "Kermode and Mayo's Film Review" after all.

I can't think why it is neccessaryto give radio presenters an award ? Lets face it their ego's are big enough as it is and they get well paid for what is a non essential job.I partly agree with post 21 and for my experience life does feel a whole lot happier when you switch off between the hours of 9am and 4pm.Pity that there isn't an award for best shrieking voice on 5live ?

Can't stand some of the R5 nominees myself .That's why I don't listen to the breakfast show or Victoria Derbyshire. Peter Allen and Aasmah Mir are ok - does she have the sexiest voice on radio? :P And Allen must be an obvious choice to take over from John Humphreys on the excellent R4 Today Programme. But although I don't really care about the Sony awards, I'm really chuffed for Danny Baker and hope he comes back soon.

Everyone really does love Danny. Most of my votes would not go to the station nominees but I do think Peter should win.



And Stuart Hall!! He is the liveliest 82 year old on any media.

Rebecca on Mayo's show has a better voice than Aasmah! More than her sexy voice she sounds knowledgeable and handles interviews pretty well. Five should aquire her as soon as possible.

Frank Skinner on a Saturday morning is pretty funny, but not as good as Danny Baker's show. Get well and get back soon Danny.

So good to see Danny Bajer's nomination... and Prof Kermode.... but please why fighting talk.... it was so good with Vaughan and O'Conner but it's become the Colin Murray wondershow...now it's all about him and not the panel.....

Good also that these blogs are attracting new names - the more the merrier. The wider the opinions the better.

I really do enjoy Radio five live and agree they deserve awards. I still can't understand how a station that chooses such great presenters as Rhod Sharpe and Eleanor Oldroyd can impose someone as useless as Ms Burden on us - not only did she do breakfast all week she was on this morning as well (is she taking over the station??) - as soon as I hear her not so dulcit tones I turn to radio four - but I miss Shelagh and Nicky - really did enjoy them together.

16 5Live nominations, but Nigel could you tell us how many people submitted examples of their work to be considered, and how many pieces in total were submitted? Just a thought as I guess you will say 'no'.

Note the word 'professional'. So how did Robbie Savage get a nomination? Did he pay for it himself?

More on Savage. Alan Green sounded quite irritated by him this afternoon. Now it's not difficult to be irritated by Savage: he aint very bright, he has the most awful voice and he twitters, Enough.



Also Greeny's 606. Dreadful. Should have been broadcast on BBC Radio Manchester. Of precious little interest to anyone else. And as ever he has a pop at Fulham where he is universally disliked.

Peter Allen gets my vote



I love it when he gets fed up with someone feeding him with a load crap and just has a go at them! So few interviewers, who should be acting on behalf of the public, actually make me feel like they are saying what I'd like to say.

I do object strongly to

1. Former Sony winner Nolan regurgitating his Northern Ireland shows.

2. Finding out he does his Monday show from Salford thereby proving you can do a remotely produced show without a problem, which would save a shedload of money for BBC licence payers if he stayed put in Belfast for the weekend and did his 5Live show from there.

3. You give airtime to Gerry Adams.

It would be brilliant if the truly wonderful Danny Baker won an award or two. Radio has just not been the same in his absence. His talent is unique and, like all good sports listeners. I hope his recovery is complete and soon.

1. What is the cost to make an entry in the awards?

2. How many BBC employees or those who have a commercial relationship with the BBC are on the judging panel?

3. Does the BBC contribute to the funding of the organisation which runs these awards?

Is this some twitter term or abbrevation for something? There was a time when the BBC was seen to uphold English standards, now it seems it's intent on dumbing them down, especially on 5Live.

A lot of the above comments have gone completely off the original subject of Sony awards but that simply underlines there should be a general ongoing blog on 5 Live programmes that covers all issues and points listeners want to raise.



Whilst I'm at it I thought your selection of a phone in or 'Your Call subject this morning (5th April) about Muslims and Extremism was blatantly patronising and opportunist. Any excuse to cover up real debate on key issues with a 'them and us' issue that inevitably yields racist overtones. For example the main news last night was the fact that many HMF serving in the front line are going to receive redundancy notices. I'm sure if that had happened before the election last May it owuld have been 'Your Call'!



Lastly could any future Sony award winner stop emphasising after a particular viewpoint has been expressed on a phone-in etc by a caller which isn't deemed to be popular or in a minority that it is 'a minority' view! It's not the presenters role to determine what's a minority or majority view is because a less confident or confused listener might agree with it but not say so because he/she has been told by the likes of Nicky Campbell! or Asmah ?? that's it a minority.

Great to see that 5 Live has plenty of nominations in the awards. I must say that I am surprised that Victoria Derbyshire has got 3 nominations. I am an avid listener but am increasingly finding that i am looking elsewhere between 10am until 4pm. I have found Victoria's show has a definate tabloid feel about it recently. Lots of hard luck stories and long drawn out interviews. Where has the cutting edge gone?

I also cannot bear to listen to Richard Bacon anymore, i could take the wowed by celebrityness and the non stop mentioning of Twitter. However it seems that he has the same guests on rotation every 6 weeks - Ross Kemp, Matthew Kelly to name but two.

Good to see that Peter Allen & Danny Baker are getting nominations they are two of the best things on the station.

Imogen, you're inside the BBC bubble. Stop 10 people outside at lunchtime and I'd be surprised one knew what it meant.

Cornelius Lysaght is brilliant as a racing correspondant and John Hunt is one of the very best radio commentators there has ever been in any sport. Why is it then that Five insist on ruining an event by sending Richard Bacon who has no idea about anything related to horse racing? Why on earth was Inverdale stuck in a studio? It honestly sounds like you have sent Alan Partridge. I dont listen to his show but people say its unbearable. On this form I agree.

Pickle my chum, you have no idea how many people will agree with you. Wait until you hear Colin Murray!

Contrast and compare Inverdale & Balding at Cheltenham with Dick Bacon at Aintree.



Bacon knows nothing about horse racing and sport in general, remember when Richard said the best thing about watching live sport was booing the opposing side’s national anthem and he wasn't joking.

On the Sony's - the management & "Talent" seem far more interested in the awards than those that pay for this gala black tie event. Last year (streamed) was hilarious - bungled speeches, no production, Evans announcing the station winner before the nominees....
