In the old industrial region, there are many public parks and wilder 'urban countryside' where nature has turned derelict land, old quarries and abandoned railway lines into new woodlands. There are over 1000 small woodlands across the region and these, together with existing trees in streets, parks and gardens are what is known as the Black Country Urban Forest. The urban forest provides a habitat for wildlife and helps to clean up air pollution and reduce the risk of flooding. |
