Kevin Keegan
Do you fancy Keegan for the Baggies?

Baggies blog - Sept 2006

by Mike Davis, site user
The BBC Black Country website has teamed up with Baggies fan, Michael Davis to give you a fan's eye view of West Bromwich Albion Football Club this season.

Robson sacking Sept 18, 2006

I never knew that 10 minutes could affect a club' season so much but obviously Albion like to make things difficult as we have done since my very first game - and hundreds more before that.

If Kevin Phillips' shot creeps inside the post Albion more than likely go on to a comfortable 2-0 win and Robson stays in a job? Or maybe not - who knows.

bryan robson
Harshly dealt with at WBA?

But because Albion dropped their first points at home all season to a team that we should be beating easily (no disrespect to Southend, but we have one of the best sides in the league and we need to beat the teams around us and more importantly the
teams at the bottom) the manager is sacked after only eight games.

Fair? Well some might say that it was time for Robson to go and yes I was one of those who was fed up of seeing us struggle to perform against mediocre sides but after eight games that's by no means a fair chance.

Surely if the results in 2006 were not up to scratch then he should have gone at the
end of the season.

But by giving him a chance to get us promoted, the slate was wiped clean of the relegation and he was given a fresh start to push us for promotion.

Albion, at the time of Robson's sacking, were ninth in the table - two points off third place. To me that's by no means disastrous.

If I could interview Jeremy Peace I'd have page after page of questions to ask the man: why sack him now? Was it just football related or had you yet again fallen out with our manager? Did you have someone in mind or did you just wake up and think "I'll sack Robson today?"

Albion have once again done something that could completely backfire on them: by sacking Robson with no better replacement out there we have left ourselves managerless and unsettled.

OK there's one clear candidate that everyone has mentioned - Curbishley - but if every Albion fan thinks realistically, he's not going to come to us because he's waiting for a
Premiership job to become available.

Kevin Keegan
Would King Kev consider Albion?

If I had to pick someone as manager it would be Kevin Keegan. I don't know what it is but I just think he's the man for us.

If all Albion fans want attacking football and goals, then I think he's the man.

None of this 4-5-1: it would be 11 up front, you score four we'll score five.

But it looks as though Pearson or Cotterill will get the job as they're the two easy choices and Albion never seem to try hard to get the right man in.

Luton 2-2 West Brom (Championship) Sat Sept 23

I've gone away to most games in the past two years now with my two mates Richie and Ste and we are still yet to see an away win when we've gone together.

So when McShane nodded the ball down on Saturday and Ronnie stabbed it in, it seemed like a fitting end as Richie was leaving for Uni the day after.

Guess what? It was ruled out by what can be only be described as the worst ref I've ever seen.

He gave silly free kicks when they weren't needed, didn't play advantage on numerous occasions and was completely biased towards Luton.

We've had this ref before and there are whispers that he's a Wolves fan as he comes from Staffordshire and, based on the game at Blues last year and Luton on Saturday, it wouldn't surprise me in the least.

Having said all that Luton are a good little side and with Mike Newell in charge they'll go far. But having equalised and then letting them come down the other end and take the lead again straight away was like shooting ourselves in the foot.

Overall, though, a point was probably a fair result and Rowan Vine ran our defence all over the shop.

People have favourite players and ones they dislike, it's the way it is. But I'm sorry no way is Zubi an international goalkeeper.

He seems to take an age to get down to a shot and he looks as comfortable as a bed of nails when he comes out for a cross.

He reminds me of when you were in school and the kid that was picked last was always stuck in goal - not because he was talented but because he was out the way there.

We need to give the kid Steele a chance because our defence looks so uneasy with Zubi at the back.

Anyway let's hope we get the right man in soon, and then we can climb the table and rightly win the title like we all wished for at the start of the season.

If not we'll just have to wait and see, only time will tell.

Boing Boing.
