Relegation seemed to come as a huge disaster and disappointment to the club and fans alike. Having witnessed what was probably the most remarkable escape from relegation ever seen last season, most fans looked at this season to build on what we had done the previous year and perhaps push that little bit further up the league. Unfortunately for Albion fans it wasn’t to be and we and fellow neighbours Blues were relegated. Having been disappointed with the way we had played against Newcastle and the way in which we had surrendered our premiership status, there were a few demonstrations against chairman and manager. Banners were held up during a minutes silence and chants of ‘Robson out’ were voiced at the end of the match; but other than that, the Albion fans did their best to get behind their team. This was a showing from the fans to say the players ‘we're here with you, through thick and thin’ and it was encouraging to see that we can all still be one. But there’s one question every Albion fan has on their lips at the moment… ‘Should Bryan Robson be sacked?’ Ok, yes his tactics are strange; and yes he does seem to have his favourite players and insists on playing one up front. But, in my opinion, he should be given ten games to see if he can get us promoted again; after all he has won promotion twice with Middlesbrough and he is no mug in terms of knowing what is needed to escape the division. So having suffered the disillusionment of relegation for the second time in five seasons Everton was always going to be a goodbye party; but hopefully not one that is a final farewell to the top flight of football. So off to Goodision Park we went for an end of season party, knowing this could be the last time we are at this level for a long time. Me and my mates were determined to enjoy the day, so we decided to dress as super heroes. Richie Anderson Batman, Stephen Baker superman and myself Robin. We were among the very few who had opted for fancy dress and we made a huge impact on Merseyside with cars beeping their horns on the main road and numerous amounts of kids asking for pictures with us. We also made the Express and Star on Monday night and were praised by the legend himself, Super Bob, for trying to create an atmosphere. It was one of the most memorable days out I can remember and with Albion showing battling qualities that they’ll definitely need next season, we were left feeling optimistic about another promotion push. If we can hold on to key players, why not? I don’t see why we can’t go up as champions. We definitely have the quality and with a few more additions we will be one of the strongest Championship sides. If we can get promoted once again, this time with a team that has already had the quality to stay in the league, I think it will stand us in better stead for the next season. Having been promoted twice before and then having to completely build a new team from scratch each time, we will have more understanding between players who know each other inside out. It’s optimistic though for the summer, looking forward to such trips as Hull and Southend away respectively. We are definitely capable of getting out of the Championship and with key players deciding their futures over the coming weeks it’ll be interesting whether we go into August still carrying the likes of Kanu, Davies and Gera. Have a good summer and let’s hope we bring the World Cup home for something to cheer about. |
