Baggies Blog - Christmas round-up

By Michael Davis
The BBC Birmingham website has teamed up with Baggies fan, Michael Davis to give you a fan's eye view of West Bromwich Albion Football Club this season.

Being as there were loads of games over the festive period here's a summary of all the games over Xmas!

The Xmas period is always a difficult time and with it beginning against a team that ruled England for over ten years in Manchester United, it was always a case of hoping for the best. With Robson making changes to the team and playing a slightly weaker or 2nd team if you like to put it that way, he was obviously hoping for a point with the idea of claiming three against Tottenham a few days later.

This method in my opinion was the right decision, although to many others at Old Trafford they weren't convinced at why he had made so many changes. Had Robinson not of gone off injured half way through the first half I feel we'd of drawn the match, as Rooney hadn't had a touch until he left the field.

Two days later Robbo's decision to play a weaker team against Utd paid off with a fantastic 2-0 win against a Spurs side sitting forth in the table.

The man who orchestrated that win was Kanu a key figure in Albion’s team this season and with Spurs not having their 1st shot until the late moments of the game every single Albion fan left that game with high hopes that we could accrue the 4 points that we thought was possible over the festive period.

Having played Liverpool 4 times in the Premiership and our record being played 4, won 0, drew 0, lost 4, scored 0, against 16, I wasn't expecting anything from this game and was once again happy that he took a weaker team up there and tried to frustrate Liverpool. Only losing 1 0 to a team that was on a run of 9 straight league wins was pleasing to say the least, some would disagree with Robson's tactic's but if we'd of gone up there and had a go we'd of lost 4 or 5 (again).

With the last match of the festive period being against our local rivals the Villa, it was by far the most important match out of all 4. With Robson saving the likes of kanu and Ellington for this match he was definitely looking for all three points. But having played really poor in the first half I was expecting a big improvement from the players in the second half but it wasn't to be, with Villa scoring in the opening few minutes of the half we were then chasing the game.

When we equalised we looked a lot more dangerous and Villa suddenly seemed really edgy, but within a few minutes having been on the other end of a dodgy penalty decision we were once again behind and this time we didn't come back.

Overall the Christmas period was quite good with a great win over Tottenham and two fairly good performances against two giants in the premiership I would have been happy if it was just those three matches.

But having never seen Albion beat the Villa ONCE in my lifetime it was just so sickening that we lost to them, the feeling you get inside is one of anger, disappointment and sadness and almost feels the same as when you come out of a relationship that means a lot to you!

But there's still hope, that comes with the January transfer window, if we could get a few good signings in then ill be happy, will be extremely disappointed if Earnie goes though as he hasn't had a fair crack of the whip this season. Heads up Albion fans

What about the other games since Christmas? Drab game vs Reading, which we should have won but threw away a lead after lapses of concentration; poor display vs Sunderland, where with a little inspiration we could have had 3 points; excellent performance and result against Blackburn; sums the Albion up really - inconsistent!

I will be interested to read your comments about the sunderland game and in particular the disgracefull behaviour of some of our moronic fans who booed carter! If they wana boo our players dont go!It would be much better to have 15,000 loyal ffans who cheer the team on and dont boo than a full house with morons who boo there own players!
