With the help of schoolchildren, Nick Toczek performs his ‘The Dragon Who Ate Our School’, a rhyming poem that has a very distinctive pattern and metre.

Students could discuss the poetic devices, such as rhyme, pattern and metre, used in the poem. The poem could also be a good basis for some journalistic writing. Students could imagine that this event has really occurred and work in groups to create a newspaper report about the event. They could interview people in the role of various people affected by the school-eating dragon including the headteacher, school students and dinner lady. These interviews would support the report writing and could be used as quotations. As it is an unusual event, students could use their imagination to think of eye-catching headlines.
