Performance analysis
There are many different ways to interpret and perform Shakespeare’s plays. Watch the videos and decide how you would perform the three scenes from Much Ado About Nothing.
Scenes to explore
Much Ado About Nothing is a comedy with lots of possibilities. The characters are larger than life. There’s always a character sneaking around in the side-lines snooping on what someone or other is doing.
Nowadays, Shakespeare’s plays are interpreted in many different ways on stage and screen. Directors and their production teams make choices on how they want to stage the play and how the characters will deliver their lines. The decisions they make can often change how the audience think and feel about the play and the characters in it.
Let’s look at three scenes and explore the possibilities for an exciting and unforgettable performance of Much Ado About Nothing:
- Act 2 Scene 1 – Rehearsing the masked ball
- Act 2 Scene 2 – Rehearsing Borachio’s plan to trick Claudio
- Act 2 Scene 3 – Rehearsing the orchard scene
Act 2 Scene 1 - Rehearsing the masked ball
Leonato has thrown a masked party to welcome Don Pedro and his soldiers to his home. A mask allows the wearer to behave much more freely than they would if their identity were known. Behind their masks, Beatrice and Benedick insult one another, pretending that they are just passing on information that they have heard.
'Much Ado About Nothing' - How would you rehearse the masked ball?

BENEDICK
I pray you, what is he?
BEATRICE
I’m sure you know him well enough. Why, he is the Prince’s
jester. A very dull fool.
CHLOE
Oh my god. Totes embarrassing babes. Beatrice went up to
Benedick and starts slagging him off right to his face, what a
muppet! He was well devoed!
CHLOE
Then, some right weirdo bloke comes over, Derek Tour I think his
name was, anyways, he was obvs well jell because he starts speaking
to Beatrice, and then, well…
BEATRICE
Only his gift is in devising impossible slanders. None but
libertines delight in him.
CHLOE
Derek Tour must have told her it was Benedick, ‘cause she was
right messing around with him (laughs), it was proper LOLs-- I
nearly peed my pants. No, really I did. Then, right, that Derek
Tour bloke only comes back over and tells Bea something else,
he was proper stirring it, she started acting like a right stroppy
cow.
BENEDICK
When I know the gentleman, I’ll tell him what you say.
BEATRICE
Do, do. He’ll but break a comparison on me, which,
her adventure not mocked or not laughed at, strikes him intomelancholy.
CHLOE
I don’t know if Benedick knew it was Beatrice or not, babes, buteither way, she was being totes out of order. And to think, I usedto tell people she was alright, but I’ve gone right off her now. Iknow Benedick’s a bit of a loser, but he has feelings. And he’swell fit. Then Derek Tours starts chatting again, so, honestly, Ihad to say something.
CHLOE
I seen you chatting rubbish all night, stop getting involved, getout my face.
DIRECTOREr, this is Much Ado About Nothing.
CHLOE
It might be nothing to you, but you’re hurting people’s feelingsbabes, and you’re ruining the party.
DIRECTOR
I think you’re confused, I’m the director.
CHLOE
I know who you are Derek, now give it up.
CHLOE
Hiya!
[CAPTION- THE END]
The video shows a group of actors rehearsing the scene and the director is trying out different ways to perform it. Which way he chooses to go will affect how the audience view Beatrice and her relationship with Benedick, for the rest of the play. As you watch consider the following:
- Does Beatrice know that it is Benedick behind the mask?
- Is she playful or vicious?
Act 2 Scene 2 – Rehearsing Borachio’s plan to trick Claudio
Borachio outlines his plan to present Claudio with “evidence” of Hero’s infidelity but it’s a confusing plan and a tricky scene to perform.
'Much Ado About Nothing' - How would you rehearse Borachio's plan?
TITLE
THE BIG SCENE
PRESENTERHello and welcome to The Big Scene, [CAPTION-MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING] we’re atrehearsals for Much Ado About Nothing. Now, this director [CAPTION-DIRECTOR] has shown some real form in this play so far, butnow she faces a real challenge.
It’s [CAPTION-ACT 2, SCENE 2] act two scene two, and Borachio [CAPTION-BORACHIO]tells Don John [CAPTION DON JOHN] of his plan to Disguise [CAPTION MARGARET] Margaret as [CAPTION-HERO] Hero to convince [CAPTION-CLAUDIO] Claudio that she’s been unfaithful to him. Sneaky. It’s got a little bit of everything this one, double crossing, mistaken identity and a little bitrole play thrown in for good measure. It’s like Saturday night round at my house, and let me tell you, if the plan’s not clear you just end up with a roomful of confused people staring at you blankly, and you do not want that. She’s gotta get this scene bang on.
TITLE
THE BIG SCENE
Here we go. Props, nice tactics, good formation.
BORACHIO
Hear me, call Margaret, Hero. Hear Margaret ,call me, Claudio.Oh, I’m sorry, is this Claudio or is it just my macchiato?
PRESENTER [OFF SCREEN]
What a mess, and boy, does it show! Baffled, bewildered, busting for a wee.
TITLE
THE BIG SCENE
Okay, here we go again, and as I said when I proposed to my fifth wife, if at first you don’t succeed, try something else.
PRESENTER [*OFF SCREEN]
Better delivery this time, this should get the plan across nicely.
PRESENTER
Oh dear, my six year old can draw better than that, and she is rubbish at art. Sorry Jennifer, but it’s true. What a wasted opportunity.
PRESENTER [OFF SCREEN]
The pressure is really on now for the director, she’s got a mountain to climb to sort this mess out, and if she doesn’t, her head will be on the chopping block. Okay, it’s not that serious, but you get the point.

THE BIG SCENE
PRESENTER [OFF SCREEN]
Oh, great move, it’s slick, it’s impressive, you can see who is who and exactly where they’re meant to be. The crowd will be right behind them for the rest of the play if they… oh no, the director’s just remembered she’s setting this back in Shakespearean times, and I’m hearing rumours that laptops weren’t invented back then. Her team are quite rightly furious.
PRESENTER
Terrible display of communication by the director there, dreadful in fact. The worst display of…
DIRECTOR
Excuse me?
PRESENTER
Yes.
DIRECTOR
What’s that you were saying?
PRESENTER
Just… I thought you’d been robbed. Unlucky.
DIRECTOR
Idiot.
PRESENTER
I didn’t know laptops hadn’t been invented then either. I really didn’t.
This video shows a group of actors rehearsing this scene and the director is trying out different ways to perform it. As you watch consider the following:
- Could the actors use props to help explain the plan?
- Would it be useful for the audience to see Margaret pretending to be Hero?
- How would you ensure a theatre audience would understand what was going on?
Act 2 Scene 3 – Rehearsing the orchard scene
In Act 2 Scene 3, Benedick is trying to hide whilst the three other characters gather in the orchard. They know he’s hiding and make up a story about Beatrice being in love with him. If you were putting on a performance of this scene how would you make the audience laugh?
'Much Ado About Nothing' - How would you rehearse the orchard scene?
NARRATOR
IT’S DAY FOUR IN THE MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING REHEARSAL HOUSE, [CAPTION- DAY 4 8:32 AM] AND THE DIRECTOR HAS JUST WOKEN UP TO DISCOVER A NEW TASK, TO FIND A FUNNY WAY TO STAGE THE SCENE WHERE BENEDICKHIDES IN THE ORCHARD FROM DON PEDRO, CLAUDIO AND LEONARDO.
NARRATOR
[CAPTION- DAY 4 10:25 AM] THE DIRECTOR IS NOT HAPPY. IT’S 10:25AM AND BENEDICK IS NOWHERE TO BE SEEN.
Okay, remember, at this point you know he’s hiding, you’remaking him believe Beatrice fancies him, even though at this partof the play Beatrice actually thinksBenedick is a massive….
BENEDICK
I heard that.
DIRECTOR
Where are you?
BENEDICK
I’m hiding.
BENEDICK
Here I am.
DIRECTOR
Okay, you’re hiding too well. Right? It’s not funny unless we cansee you. And what have you done to your face?
BENEDICK
So I can hide. Took me ages. Can’t I keep it?
DIRECTOR
Um…
NARRATOR
20 MINUTES LATER, [CAPTION- DAY 4 10:47 AM] AND THE DIRECTOR HAS MADE BENEDICK’S HIDING PLACE A BIT EASIER TO SPOT.
LADY IN GREY JUMPER
I did never think that lady would have loved any man.
MAN WITH BEARD
No, nor I neither. But most wonderful that she does so dote onSenor Benedick, whom she hath in all outward behaviour seemedever to abhor.
BENEDICK
Argh, I’m sorry, sorry, sorry, can I do that again? (laughter)
DIRECTOR
No, no, no, that's good, that's good, it’s funny, keep it in.
MAN WITH BEARD
By my troth my lord, I cannot tell what to think of it. She loveshim with an enraged affection, it is past the infinite of thought.
BENEDICK
Argh! Argh! Aah! I’m sorry, sorry. Can we do this again?
BENEDICK
Aah! Aah!
DIRECTOR
That's so funny!
BENEDICK
Ah.
MAN WITH BEARD
[INAUDIBLE]
BENEDICK
Argh! Argh!
LAUGHTER
BENEDICK
Ow. Guys, come on.
DIRECTOR
All right, all right, that’s a break, that’s a break, come on, time for lunch.
NARRATOR
THE DIRECTOR [CAPTION-DAY 4 12:03 PM] PLEASED WITH PROGRESS, DECIDES TO TAKE A BREAK.
DIRECTOR
No, no. Not you Gareth. Just a couple more times, keeppracticing. It’s going really well though. Cool, keep it up.
MAN WITH BEARDIt’s going well I think. Are you happy?
BENEDICK
Argh!
BENEDICK
Ah!
This video shows a group of actors rehearsing this scene and the director is trying out different ways to perform it. As you watch, consider the following:
- How do you provide enough hiding places for Benedick?
- An orchard could be tricky to reconstruct on stage. Would you use real trees and bushes?
