How are councillors elected in Scotland?

Description

The Single Transferable Vote system is used to elect local councillors in Scotland.

Classroom Ideas

This clip could be used to (re)introduce the Single Transferable Vote electoral system. Following the clip, there could be used further discussion of advantages and disadvantages of the Single Transferable Vote. To further illustrate voting systems, the teacher could lead ‘X Factor’ simulations on bands/pop stars. ‘Most popular’ votes could be counted using the First Past The Post system and again with Proportional Representation to compare and contrast the results.
