Description
The drowning of the Tryweryn valley near Bala was a turning point in the history of Welsh nationalism. The City of Liverpool decided to drown the valley and the Welsh-speaking village of Capel Celyn to create a reservoir. Despite political opposition and widespread protests, the 48 villagers had to leave their homes and the reservoir opened in 1965.

Classroom Ideas
This clip can be used when studying Welsh culture. Students could be given a vocabulary sheet to enable them to follow and understand the clip as they view it and then a reading and comprehension task could be set. The clip offers an opportunity to start a discussion about the history of Tryweryn, focusing on expressing opinions and the associated vocabulary, structures and phrases. Learners can be asked to write a letter or an article giving their personal opinions about the topic.
