About Shakespeare

Shakespeare’s plays include Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet and The Tempest. Shakespeare spent most of his professional life with an acting company in London, Lord Chamberlain’s Men.

Shakespeare wrote tragedies, like Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet, and also comedies, like The Tempest and Twelfth Night.

William Shakespeare was an English actor, poet and playwright who was born in 1564. During Shakespeare’s time, people had a variety of different beliefs and superstitions.

Shakespeare helped transform the English language. Many words and phrases that are commonly used to day were first written down by Shakespeare.

Acting companies built their own theatres for their performances. In 1599 Shakespeare’s company built the Globe Theatre on the south bank of the River Thames in London.
