Various tenses – WJECTalking about the future

So far in this study guide, we’ve talked about the weekend in the present tense, but what about next weekend?

Notice how the endings change in the next examples:

• Bydda i’n gweithio. – I’ll work./I’ll be working.
• Byddi di’n gweithio hefyd. – You’ll work too./You’ll be working too.
• Bydd e’n/o’n chwarae pêl-droed. – He’ll play football./He’ll be playing football.
• Bydd hi’n chwarae pêl-droed hefyd. – She’ll play football too./She’ll be playing football too.
• Bydd Sam yn chwarae pêl-droed hefyd. – Sam will play football too.
• Byddwn ni’n cael hwyl. – We’ll have fun./We’ll be having fun.
• Byddwch chi’n mwynhau. – You’ll enjoy (yourselves)./You’ll be enjoying (yourselves).
• Byddan nhw’n aros yn y tŷ. – They’ll stay in the house./They’ll be staying in the house.

So what will you and your friends be doing over the weekend?

Beth fyddwch chi’n wneud dros y penwythnos?

Why not prepare a paragraph or two to answer this question? You could use the following patterns:

• Byddaf i’n… – I will…
• Bydd fy ffrindiau a fi’n… – My friends and I will…
• Byddwn ni’n… – We will….

To ask questions in the future, use a soft mutation, eg:

• Fyddi di’n mynd i Sbaen y flwyddyn nesaf? – Will you be going to Spain next year?
• Fyddwch chi’n aros mewn gwesty? – Will you be staying in a hotel?

To answer, you would use:

• Byddaf. – Yes, I will.
• Na fyddaf. – No, I won’t.
• Byddwn. – Yes we will.
• Na fyddwn. – No we won’t.

You could use this tense to discuss future plans in a group, eg

Beth fyddi di’n wneud yn y dyfodol? – What will you do in the future?

Byddaf i’n gweithio mewn ysgol.

Fyddi di’n teithio?

Byddaf./Na fyddaf.

Here are some other questions you could ask:

• Pam fyddi di’n…? – Why will you…?
• Pryd fyddi di’n…? – When will you…?
• Sut fyddi di’n…? – How will you…?
• Ble fyddi di’n…? – Where will you…?
• Gyda phwy fyddi di’n…? – With who will you…?

You could also use the following:

• Pam byddi di’n…? – Why will you?
• Pryd byddi di’n…? – When will you…?
• Sut byddi di’n…? – How will you…?
• Ble byddi di’n…? – How will you…?
• Gyda phwy byddi di’n…? – With who will you…?
