Using social media – die sozialen Medien – to keep up with what your friends do in their free time is a popular pastime. Social media allows people to make new friends from all over the world, including in German-speaking countries.

Almost half of the population of Great Britain use social media (30.3 million), however in Germany there are 22 million users, out of a population of just over 80 million. This means that just a quarter of the population are social media users.

Over a third of all Austrians (3.2 million people) are frequently on social media and a quarter of the population in Switzerland (2.6 million users) have registered with some form of social media.
