How to proofread and redraftCan I make it better?

After finishing a first draft of writing, you should check your writing and look for ways to improve it. You should always look out for errors in spelling, punctuation and structure. This is called proofreading.

Can I make it better?

Different types of writing will need different writing styles and techniques according to their context, audience and purpose.

As you write, read back your writing as if you were its audience. Try to get a sense of whether the style of writing that you are creating is suitable and follows the conventions and writing techniques that will help it to succeed. As you do this, think what you can change or what you might add to your writing so that it becomes even more effective and better suited to your audience and purpose.

Redrafting

If you have time, write your work out a second time to create what professional writers call a 'fair copy' or 'final draft'.

Making corrections obvious – use a single line to cross through a word or phrase, not a messy scribbled zig-zag. Remember, too - if you need to insert a paragraph simply write “//” where it should have begun.
