Getting started

Introduce yourself briefly at the beginning of the discussion, giving a few facts about yourself.

Listen to the following audio clips to see how James and Katie introduce themselves.

Helo, Katie ydw i. Dw i’n mwynhau chwarae pêl-droed gyda fy ffrindiau.

Bore da, James ydw i. Yn fy amser hamdden dw i'n mwynhau treulio amser gyda fy nheulu a mynd i'r sinema gyda ffrindiau.

Question

Can you translate the following?

Hello, I’m Joe. I enjoy sports in my spare time.

Pronunciation is important too. There is only one way to improve that - by practising aloud!

Exercise

Say the sentence you’ve just translated into Welsh aloud and then play the next audio clip, so that you can compare your pronunciation with that on the audio file.

Helo, Joe ydw i. Dw i’n mwynhau chwaraeon yn fy amser hamdden.

Once all group members have introduced themselves, you’ll need to state the subject you have chosen to discuss and explain why you have chosen this subject.

The Welsh word for discussion is trafodaeth.

The verb to discuss is trafod.

Here are some examples of how you could explain what you are going to discuss:

  • Rydyn ni’n mynd i drafod... – We are going to discuss…
  • Rydyn ni wedi penderfynu trafod... – We have decided to discuss...
  • Rydyn ni wedi dewis trafod... – We have chosen to discuss...
  • Heddiw, rydyn ni’n mynd i drafod... – Today, we are going to discuss...

Remember to give a brief reason why you have chosen this subject.

  • … achos mae'n bwnc pwysig i bobl ifanc. – ... because it is an important subject for young people.
  • … achos mae'n bwnc diddorol. – ... because it’s an interesting subject.
  • … achos mae'n bwnc dadleuol. – ... because it’s a controversial subject.

Listening exercise

How about practising some of the expressions? Read the following aloud, one by one, and then play the audio clip after each one to check your pronunciation.

Rydyn ni’n mynd i drafod trefnu trip achos mae’n bwnc diddorol iawn.

Rydyn ni wedi dewis trafod bwyta’n iach achos mae'n bwnc pwysig i bobl ifanc.

Heddiw, rydyn ni’n mynd i drafod gwella’r ardal achos mae llawer o broblemau yn yr ardal yma, er enghraifft...

Exercise

Prepare a short piece explaining your choice of subject and explain why you have chosen this subject. Read your sentence aloud several times so that you learn to say it fluently and confidently.
