Organising a carnival or a similar event

When arranging a carnival, or a similar event that involves a great many people, there are many things to arrange and many people who you need to speak to.

Eleri is about to arrange Pentre Ioan's first carnival in over a decade. In order to get some ideas, she decides to ask her neighbour, Mrs Hughes, a resident for over 50 years, if she has any pictures of previous carnivals. She goes to her house and knocks on the door. What should she say when Mrs Hughes answers? Here are some ideas.

  • She should greet Mrs Hughes.
  • She should explain what she is doing.
  • She should ask whether Mrs Hughes has any pictures.

How would she do this?

Listen to the following conversation:

Question

Listen again and then decide whether the following statements are cywir (correct) or anghywir (false).

  1. Mae Eleri yn helpu i drefnu carnifal.
  2. Mae Eleri eisiau gweld er mwyn cael syniadau.
  3. Mae Eleri yn gofyn am rif ffôn Mrs Hughes.
  4. Mae Eleri’n cael y lluniau.

If you and your friends were organising a carnival or similar event, you would need to discuss many things, eg:

Cyfarfod i drefnu’r carnifal

Agenda

  1. Pryd?
  2. Ble?
  3. Syniadau – beth fydd yn digwydd?
  4. Pwy sy’n gwneud beth?
  5. ?

You have already come across ways to discuss the first, second and fourth points on the agenda in steps 1 and 3 of this study guide, but how would you deal with points 3 and 5?

Exchanging ideas

If you wanted to offer some ideas or suggestsions, you could develop language patterns already revised in this revision guide, eg:

  1. Beth am drefnu __________? – What about organising __________?
  2. Beth am gynnal __________? – What about holding __________?

You could also use the following patterns:

  1. Gallen ni __________. – We could __________.
  2. Gallen ni gael rasys ar y cae. – We could have races on the field.
  1. Dylen ni __________.– We should __________.
  2. Dylen ni drefnu cystadleuaeth i anifeiliaid anwes. – We should organise a competition for pets.

Look at Useful verbs for more information on Gallen ni and Dylen ni.

Asking for ideas

You could ask other people for their ideas, eg:

  • Oes syniadau gyda chi?/Oes syniadau gyda ti? – Do you have any ideas?
  • Oes gennych chi syniadau?/Oes gennyt ti syniadau? – Do you have any ideas?
  • Hoffech chi __________? – Would you like __________?
  • Hoffech chi gerdded drwy’r dref? – Would you like to walk through the town?
  • Ydyn ni’n mynd i __________? – Are we going to __________?
  • Ydyn ni’n mynd i gael gig yn y nos? – Are we going to have a gig in the night/evening?

Asking for opinions

You could also ask for other people’s opinions, eg:

  • Beth ydy’ch barn chi am __________?/Beth ydy dy farn di am __________? – What’s your opinion about __________?
  • Beth ydych chi’n feddwl?/Beth wyt ti’n feddwl? – What do you think?
  • Beth ydych chi’n feddwl o’r syniad?/Beth wyt ti’n feddwl o’r syniad? – What do you think of the idea?

Question

How would you respond to the following questions?

  • Beth am gynnal noson gwis i godi arian?
  • Beth ydy’ch barn chi am 'r cae pêl-droed?
  • Ydyn ni’n mynd i gael ?
  • Hoffech chi gael gig yn y nos?

You could use the same language patterns to discuss nawdd – sponsorship, eg:

  • Beth am ofyn i’r garej am nawdd?
  • Ydyn ni’n mynd i ofyn am nawdd gan ?
  • Dylen ni fynd i’r banc i ofyn am nawdd.
  • Gallen ni ofyn i’r siop fara am roliau bara i wneud cŵn poeth.

Why not follow the steps in this study guide to discuss an event you are holding to raise money? Discuss the following:

  • what kind of event
  • the venue
  • the time – the date and actual time
  • what exactly will happen – ask for suggestions, offer ideas and exchange information
  • who will do what
  • the price of the tickets
  • who you can ask for sponsorship or support, eg bread rolls for hot dogs
  • how you will let people know about the event
