Expressive art - Question 1
Question 1 tests your knowledge and understanding of artworks you have studied on the course.
- Your response should be based on one artwork you have studied.
- You will be asked to explain two elements relating to your selected artwork and to explain how social, cultural and/or other influences impacted on the artwork.
- This question is worth 10 marks.
- To gain full marks, you must respond to all of the prompts in the question and make ten relevant, fully justified points.
- You must give a balanced response as there is a maximum of four marks available for each question prompt.
You can prepare for this question by learning about:

There are many influences which can impact on artworks, including:
- other artists/art movements
- local, national and world events
- different cultures and popular culture
- their environment
- living conditions and personal circumstances
- family and community
- politics
- belief
- gender
- health and wellbeing
- technology
- developments in other areas, eg science, literature, music
You could begin your response by stating which artwork you have selected, for example:
I have selected Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird (1940) by Frida Kahlo.
Alternatively, you could give the name of your artwork in a heading, for example:
Still Life with Basket of Apples (1890-94) by Paul Cezanne
You must refer to the specific selected artwork throughout your response. If you discuss other artworks, or the artist’s work in general, you will not gain marks.
Information given must be factually correct. Marks cannot be awarded for points which contain incorrect information. Your comments must show that you have studied the artwork.
You cannot be awarded marks for giving biographical information which you have not related to the impact on your selected artwork. Compare the following two examples:
Frida Kahlo was involved in a bus accident in 1926 and was badly injured. She broke a lot of bones and she fractured her spine and pelvis. She spent a long time in hospital recovering in a full body cast and was left in a lot of pain for the rest of her life.
= 0 marksHealth problems caused by a serious bus accident in 1926 impacted on Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird. This is symbolised by the subject matter, particularly the thorny necklace which is shown digging into her skin and making her bleed.
