The imperfect tense describes an ongoing action in the past or something that used to happen. Get to grips with using the imperfect tense and check your understanding with a quiz.
To form the imperfect tense, take the nous form of the present tenseA verb that describes an action that is happening now or that happens regularly, eg I eat breakfast every day., remove the -ons and add the following endings:

Être is the only irregularSomething that does not follow regular patterns and may have a different form. verb in the imperfect tense. The stem is irregular but the endings are the same as for regular verbs in the imperfect tense
