The use of machines and hand tools are generally to remove material for shaping and forming or connecting.

Each machine has a different set of safety rules for them which she be clearly indicated on or close to the machine. These are generally about Personal Protective Equipment that should be used such as goggles, gloves, and aprons.

You should always make sure that you attire is appropriate. When in the workshop make sure you have sensible shoes as there could be falling hazards and you maybe dealing with heavy objects that could fall.

Ensure that you have no loose clothing or loose hair as there are many machines an objects that could catch you clothing. Wearing a apron can help reduce this risk and avoid wearing scarfs and hoodies.

Safety for hand tools

You should only use hand tools that have shown to you be your teacher.

Check that the hand tool is safe to use. Check for any flaws or broken parts that would make the hand tool ineffective or cause injury or harm. If the hand tool has a visible fault then report it to the teacher or technician.

When using hand tools make sure that any workpiece is secure when you are working on it no matter how long you will be using it. This can be done by using a vice or clamp to secure to a benches.

When using cutting tools always make sure that your hands are safely behind the cutting edge at all times. Never leave a cutting tool on bench edge and make sure they are safely carried and will not cause harm to you or others when navigating the workshop.
