Top tips on expanding your writing ideas

  • Aim to use as many synonyms as possible and range of structures to make your writing more interesting. Using the negative form and a range of intensifiers can help you do this.
  • Include verbs in the first person of the singular and of the plural and whenever possible refer to what other people are doing too: je fais/ma petite sœur fait… (I do/my little sister does…)
  • Include a range of words to express frequency, adverbs and connectives and also aim to use comparatives and superlatives whenever you can.
  • Do include a range of opinions with their justifications whenever possible.
  • Think of ways to include a range of tenses, for example: talk about what you normally do (present tense), refer to what you did in the past as an example to compare your habits with (perfect and imperfect tenses), discuss briefly what you are going to do in the future (near future and simple future) and give details about what you would love to do if it was at all possible (conditional tense). For example:

je fais - I do

avant, je faisais… - before, I used to do …

hier, j’ai aussi mangé… - yesterday, I also ate…

demain, je vais aller… - tomorrow, I am going to go…

je regarderai… - I will watch…

si je pouvais… - if I could…

je me lèverais - I would get up…

j’irais - I would go…

je ferais - I would do
