Many people would recommend a short winter break to a German Christmas market Weihnachtsmarkt or Christkindlmarkt as an absolute must.

Christmas markets have been held in Germany and Austria since the Middle Ages.

They are usually held in the main square of a town or city and are made up of small stalls selling homemade gifts, food and drink. A warm mulled wine flavoured with cinnamon, orange and cloves, known as Glühwein (literally: glowing wine) is the traditional drink served at these markets. Non-alcoholic varieties are also sold.

The markets of Köln and Dortmund attract the highest number of visitors every year. However the Christmas markets in Stuttgart, Frankfurt am Main, Nürnberg and Dresden are also very popular with tourists and locals alike.
