Hardware similarities

Desktops, laptops, games consoles and even supercomputers have the same core hardware. This includes:

  • motherboard or mainboard – the mainboard makes everything below work together
  • processor or central processing unit (CPU) – carries out instructions
  • secondary storage – stores files and , usually a hard drive or solid state drive
  • RAM or memory – temporarily stores recently used files and applications for quick access later
  • graphics card – produces and images on the screen, can be a separate card or built into the motherboard
  • soundcard – produces sound from the speakers or headphones and powers the microphone, can be separate or built into the motherboard

All of these devices have continued to become more powerful and are able to store more information. This enables them to run increasingly sophisticated and games.

Similar components are found in many modern devices
