Hardware similarities
Desktops, laptops, games consoles and even supercomputers have the same core hardware. This includes:
- motherboard or mainboard – the mainboard makes everything below work together
- processor or central processing unit (CPU) – carries out instructions
- secondary storage – stores files and applicationA software program that allows a user to perform a specific task., usually a hard drive or solid state drive
- RAM or memory – temporarily stores recently used files and applications for quick access later
- graphics card – produces 2D (two-dimensional)Having only two dimensions, usually length (or height) and width.and 3D (three-dimensional)An object with width, height and depth, eg a cube. images on the screen, can be a separate card or built into the motherboard
- soundcard – produces sound from the speakers or headphones and powers the microphone, can be separate or built into the motherboard
All of these devices have continued to become more powerful and are able to store more information. This enables them to run increasingly sophisticated programSequences of instructions for a computer. and games.
