Full-time student, Francesca Jarvis is currently studying for a Bachelors Degree in Science, Biology and Conservation at a University in Lincoln. She also does kick boxing when she finds the time.

Having taken part in the last two carnivals, this is the first time Francesca plucked up up the courage to enter the competition to be Carnival Queen.

"I'm really looking forward to the day..."

"I thought I was going to be nervous on the night but I was fine. My family were there really supporting me and kept me going. I think my family were more nervous than I was. I really enjoyed the night," explains Francesca.

Francesca will lead the Carnival procession as Queen, encouraging people lining the route to get involved.

"I’m looking forward to the day but I’m also a bit nervous too. It’s a big responsibility being the Queen. When you’re in the carnival troop you've got the other girls to hide behind, but when you're the Queen you are right in the front and everyone is looking at you. I have to make sure I keep smiling."

"Carnival brings people together..."

Francesca’s role as Queen is not just for a day, duties will include presentations in schools and colleges promoting cultural awareness in the city, also taking part in other carnivals throughout Birmingham and the UK.

Francesca adds: "I love taking part in Carnival! The best bit is when you enter the park and everyone is clapping and waving. It’s good to know you’re making other people happy."

"Carnival brings people together - that’s what we really need in Birmingham.

"There will be so much going on this year. From a bouncing castle for the kids, a fun fair, food, music and lots more… It will be a great day and it’s free.

"Once we start supporting our community, Birmingham will shine."

Congratulations Francesca !!!
