So what does it feel like to fast during Ramadan? We will be taking one non-Muslim Birmingham woman and giving her an opportunity to experience a week - fasting.

Meet this year's BBC Birmingham Ramadan blogger - Clare Edwards

Throughout the week, award winning festival organiser Clare will be blogging her experience of what it feels like to fast. She will be sharing her experiences of sitting in with a Muslim family as they break their fast. At various points in the day she will be self-reflecting and trying to capture her spiritual journey in a blog. She will also be sending in her pictures to capture the mood of the day.

So why did Clare want to do this?

I was keen to get involved with fasting for Ramadan, because it has intrigued me over the years watching friends and colleagues do it. In addition, most recently I have been able to travel through work to India and the Middle East and my new friends in those places have encouraged me to try it to learn more about the spiritual and focusing effects of the fasting process. So, when BBC WM asked me to try it for a week, I jumped at the chance!

Who is Clare Edwards?

I am a freelance music consultant who specialises in running projects that foster new collaborations and partnerships. I am currently working for a number of clients from both the music education world and the music industry, including 'Sing Up' and 'Soweto Kinch Productions'.

I am passionate about the arts and am committed to arts education and community work. Because of this, I sit in on a number of boards including the Arts Council of England. I am also chair of the board of 'Sound It Out Community Music'. This is an organisation that makes 'music making' accessible to everyone. As well as this I am also a school governor. So, a real mix!

A typical day for me starts with my two lovely daughters jumping on my head to wake me up followed by days of meetings, event planning and social networking (I love Twitter!). Quite often my evenings include family time or music making. I have been Music Director of choir groups 'Notorious' and 'Soprano in Ex Cathedra'. Earlier in the year I worked with the Ulfah Arts Collective – a group of Muslim women singers.

Influential woman

I have been shocked and delighted over the past few years as work has gained some high profile recognition. I was the overall winner of UK Young Music Entrepreneur 2008 and Birmingham Young Professional of the Year in 2007. In 2007, Clare won the British Council's UK Music Entrepreneur of the Year award- and as part of the prize she was given the opportunity to take part in a two week tour of the Indian music industry. I was also (very bizarrely!) listed as number 45 in the Birmingham Post’s 'Power 50' in 2007 and have moved up to No 31 in the 2009 list!

Allah has made it obligatory for all muslims to fast during Ramadan. When a person fasts, He declares his solidarity toward the people who're in hunger.it helps him develop a sense of generosity, kindness and brotherhood. If you can't develope any one of these qualities, your efforts goes to smoke and you can only experience the bitterness of hunger unless you keep its spirit high. everybody comes under this rule without exception. May allah reward your good deeds and forgive your transgression.

be patientremember there is a meal promised at the end of the day and that the body is getting healthier every minutebe aware of what is happening inside your body and the benefits of itdrink and eat slowly and make sure you have fruit after the main meal.Milk and water are v important tooyou don't have to have a big breakfast - you will still feel hungry at the same timeafter the 3rd day you don't feelit much - the body has a natural mechanismyou will feelv healthy at the end of it!well done and good luck

I too am a non Muslim and I am giving up three 'vices' for the duration of Ramadan, cakes fatty deserts and ice cream. I believe that come Eid time, my body will feel better for it.Good Luck, Clare!

Make sure you have breakfast before sunrise, no matter how tired you are. I recommend porridge as it's not too rich for early in the morning but it releases energy throughout the day.Break your fast slowly with a sips from glass of water followed by something light and easily digestible. Figs or dates are traditional and rightly so. Work up slowly to serious eating - just let your stomach get ready for it.You may feel as if you could swallow a cow whole, but this would be a bad idea. I foolishly broke my first fast with a mixed grill = serious stomach agony.
