Mary

"You see a lot of what goes on in the world, working in a pub and a shop like I do. All sorts of people seem to confide in you - it's like they see you as some kind of "wise woman". Well, I've seen enough ups and downs in my time to be able to offer advice I suppose, and I can be trusted to keep a secret, although I'm not afraid to speak my mind either. But I don't push people to talk - I know when a customer needs to be left alone.

"I've seen this area go through lots of changes - this new development by the canal is just one of many. Take the "Bicycle Works" apartments for example, I can remember when it really was a bicycle factory - I used to work there! That's where I met my first husband actually. Oh I'm sure some people would love to see me move away - they'd like to get their hands on the pub and turn it into an estate agents or a fancy restaurant or something like that. But I like this area. This is my patch. I've seen other people come and go, but I've hung on. That's why I was so worried about Brian messing things up with that Trucon business at the allotments. People have long memories!

"I never thought I'd marry again mind, and I surprised myself when I said yes to Bill - but why not? I just hope that Bill can get over the accident somehow, he still blames himself for Fatima's death, poor fellow. At least Sean’s not causing me any stress. He’s really matured over the past year and I can tell he’s itching to get out into the big wide world. As long as he knows he has people here who love him, I’ll be happy."
