THE GOLDEN CROWN
What's it all about?
The Golden Crown was one of the first pubs in Silver Street to be adopted by the Irish, when they came over to find work in the 1940s and '50s. Now most of the Irish have moved away but landlady Mary Brady is still holding on. However many developers want to buy the pub there's no way she's selling out!
The Crown has seen its fair share of wild nights over the years and Mary never needs an excuse to throw a party - St Patrick's Day, Eurovision, the World Cup...you name it, Mary will celebrate it!
Most likely to see there:
Mary - The landlady and general shoulder to cry on. Sean - If you have one too many it will probably be Sean who kicks you out! Brian - He'd rather drink at the bar than help out his sister behind it.
Classic moments:
- Jodie telling Mani that she's his daughter, on New Year's Eve 2004. - Nadia arguing with Mary and walking out halfway through cutting her hair. - A blackout in the middle of an England match during the 2006 World Cup when Brian's workers cut through a power cable.
Did you know?
Back in the '50s The Golden Crown was dubbed the "Irish Labour Exchange", because workers newly arrived from Ireland would go there to get information about jobs.
