caption

Mary Yacoob is seeking to measure and classify the overlooked on the streets of Birmingham and to discover the poetic in the everyday, from marks on a wall to a history of notice boards. These artworks are documented online and in a free publication available across the city. The audience is invited to trace these disappearances and document their own invisible works of art.

Background

Mary Yacoob focuses on the poetry of details in our everyday environments, drawing attention to the ephemeral traces of human presence. She often uses rule-based systems to generate images and from the data collected makes graphs or map-like images.

Examples include works that reveal the painstaking documentation of the number of dust particles on her television screen after 24 hours, the height of curves in her duvet cover after an afternoon nap and the number and size of toothpaste flecks on her bathroom mirror after brushing her teeth.
