During the UK's third lockdown Falmouth students create 50:50 film series

Students from 50:50 universities were invited to pitch to create a New Voices mini-series to showcase those how can join the BBC’s 50:50 contributors database. A student collective from Falmouth University won the pitch. Here are the films they created.

Falmouth students share fisherman Amy O'Brian's story for 50:50

“A lot of people were like ‘what’s she doing? Why she going fishing? Like girls don’t go fishing’,” recounts Amy O’Brian. “But it doesn’t matter if I’m a man or a woman, I’m crew.”

Amy O’Brian is a commercial fisherman born and raised in Cornwall. She shares what it means to be a woman changing her industry.

Conductor and musician Marcus Alleyne reflects on diversity in the media

“I guess there was always that question as to ‘do I fit into this industry?’” conductor Marcus Alleyne recalls his feelings on entering entry the music profession.

Marcus Alleyne is a conductor, musician and the vice-chairman of Black Voices Cornwall. He shares his experience of working in the classical creative arts and opinions on the diversity in the media.

Lucy Apple on disabled people representation in the media

“There needs to be more disable people on telly and not just disabled-related programme,” says visual artist Lucy Apple. “I think we have come a long way since I was growing up but I think there’s a long way to.”

Cornish artist Lucy Apple tells her experiences of living with cerebral palsy and her views on why better media representation of disabled people is important.
