For decades the most likely destination for Turkish immigrant workers has been Germany, although this has not prevented a sizeable population of people born in the country settling in Britain. That population has two distinct strands: ethnically Turkish and ethnically Kurdish, the latter being predominantly refugees and asylum seekers. North London is the overwhelming hub of Turkish and Kurdish culture in Britain, although the visible growth in Turkish restaurants and grocers around the country is illustrating a shift outwards. | | Concentrations of people born in Turkey Map on right shows country as if areas with roughly equal populations were the same size. 53,964 people born in Turkey were living in Britain at the 2001 Census. 39,000 of these were recorded in London, the largest cluster being 3,924 in north Tottenham. 27,000 more Turkey-born people were living in Britain in 2001 than in 1991. 2 areas outside London had Turkish clusters above 100 people � south Cheshunt in Hertfordshire and the Clifton area of Nottingham. |
