At-a-glance

218,348 people born abroad were living in the South West in 2001, according to the Census - 4.43% of the population.

34% more people born abroad lived in the region in 2001 than in 1991 � one of the fastest rates of change.

149% more people born abroad now live in the Stoke Gifford area of Bristol than in 1991 � representing 5% of the local population.

737 people born abroad living in Keynsham is the smallest number in the region.

South-west England is one of the regions that has experienced the most change in immigration terms in recent years � although it ranks eighth out of 11 in terms of absolute numbers.

By virtue of Wiltshire's association with the Army, the picture is complex because a lot of those born abroad are children born in Germany to British services families.

Beyond that, only a handful of local areas have populations born abroad above the national average of 7.53%.

The greatest rates of change have been seen in Bristol, Exeter and Cheltenham. Although the numbers are relatively small compared to other areas of the country, in local terms the changes would have been more noticeable.
