At-a-glance

77,312 people born abroad living in Wales is the lowest proportion of any of Britain's nation or region � 2.66% of all residents.

23% more people born abroad lived in Wales in 2001 than in 1991 � but this still represents the slowest rate of change compared with other parts of Britain.

11 areas of Wales have seen decreases in people born abroad � from a handful through to hundreds fewer.

77% more people born in South Africa living in Wales - 3,000 people - is the greatest proportional increase by one group.

Wales has the lowest proportion of residents born abroad � 2.66% of the population, although in terms of actual numbers it ranks second lowest next to the North East.

Unlike some other areas with low numbers of people born abroad, the rate of change remains anchored at the bottom of the national table.

As expected, Cardiff as the biggest city has the largest clusters of people born abroad, although the nationalities represented differ from other areas of Britain.

Cardiff, Swansea and some other areas like Wrexham have also seen change through the asylum dispersal system, although most of this happened after the census.

The Welsh valleys have some of the lowest numbers of people born abroad � indicating the key role that economic factors play in migration.
