Overview

Britain's Bangladeshi communities are overwhelming concentrated in London, and within London overwhelmingly concentrated in the East End.

Otherwise, of the 154,000 Bangladeshi-born in the country, 15,000 are to be found in Birmingham and 10,000 in Greater Manchester.

Bangladeshi people are a key immigrant community and the census, separately, found 283,000 people of Bangladeshi heritage in Britain.

Future census reports may find fewer people who were born in Bangladesh as the arriving generations age - similar trends can be seen among Irish or Caribbean born. But at the same time, there will probably be a steady growth in a British-born Bangladeshi ethnicity.

11 of the top 20 areas for Bangladeshi populations are in inner London � the top one being Poplar with 14,098 people.

4,288 Bangladeshi-born people in Oldham make it the most popular area outside of London.

1% of London's residents were born in Bangladesh � one of the few countries of birth to reach this percentage.
