224,623 people in the East Midlands were born abroad � 5.83% of the local population. 45,225 people born in India comprise the largest source country, totally a fifth of the foreign-born. 106% rise in people born in South Africa, to 6,292, is the biggest percentage change for the top nationalities. 413 people who were born abroad live in Hucknall, Notts, the smallest regional cluster.

The East Midlands saw the number of its residents born abroad grow by a quarter in the decade to 2001.

Within those figures, there are some complex local stories. About 40% of people in Leicester's Belgrave area were born abroad � the highest proportion in the region. In other areas, the numbers are nearer the national average.

Evington in Leicester has seen some of the greatest change, although in absolute terms its foreign-born residents make up only a fifth of the local population.
