Overall in the 2001 Census there were 321,000 people who said they were born in Pakistan, up a third on 1991 and representing roughly 0.56% of the British population. London has seen the largest change in the numbers, yet - unlike for other nationalities - the capital does not dominate in terms of overall figures for Pakistan born. The capital's figures are only marginally bigger than those found in the West Midlands and Yorkshire. And the local areas with the biggest Pakistan-born communities are all outside London, reflecting economic migration to the Midlands and northern towns. | | Concentrations of people born in Pakistan Map on right shows country as if areas with roughly equal populations were the same size. So, densely populated London takes up much more space than sparsely populated Scottish Highlands. |

320,767 Pakistan-born people were living in Britain at the time of the Census, up from 234,000 in 1991. 66,655 Pakistan-born people in London make it the most popular region as a whole but the community hubs are mostly outside the capital. 5 of the top population centres for Pakistan-born people are in the West Midlands and a further two are in Yorkshire. 12,073 Pakistan-born people in Bradford's university area comprise 20% of the local population. |
