Three counties comprise this category in the 2001 Census � Bulgaria, Hungary and Slovakia.

The figures for 1991 and 2001 are not directly comparable because Slovakia was not part of the earlier count � the results on the tables below should be treated cautiously.

Many of those in Britain before 2001 were almost certainly eastern European Jews who fled Nazism � the clusters appearing in hubs of Britain's Jewish communities such as Golders Green in north London.

Numbers from these countries are almost certainly shifting at present due to the changes in work visa arrangements for Eastern European nations.

Concentrations of people born in Other Eastern Europe

Map on right shows country as if areas with roughly equal populations were the same size. So, densely populated London takes up much more space than sparsely populated Scottish Highlands.

23,607 people born in Bulgaria, Hungary and Slovakia were resident in Britain at the time of the 2001 Census, some 0.04% of the population. 4 of the most popular areas for these groups are locations closely associated with Britain's Jewish communities.
