The immigration picture for Hong Kong is complicated because the population has built up in different ways over the years.
Overall, 95,000 people born in Hong Kong were living in Britain at the 2001 census, some 0.17% of the population.
The clusters were widespread: although the Chinese Hong-Kong communities were primarily in London, there were also groups in the North West, in particular Manchester and Liverpool.
However, some of the numbers may also be due to the return of colonial personnel whose children were born in Hong Kong before the handover to China in 1997.
