One of Born Abroad's most interesting stories is that of Germany-born people in Britain. There were 262,000 recorded in the 2001 census. Many are them are almost certainly not German but the children of British forces personnel, born while stationed in Germany itself. Wiltshire, Colchester, North Yorkshire and Aldershot - all centres of army life - have a combined Germany-born population of 12,000 people. Other Germany clusters are in affluent west London areas particularly Richmond, which has a dedicated German school offering a German curriculum and exam system. | | Concentrations of people born in Germany Map on right shows country as if areas with roughly equal populations were the same size. So, densely populated London takes up much more space than sparsely populated Scottish Highlands. |

262,276 Germany-born people were found to be in Britain at the 2001 Census, representing about 0.5% of the total population. 22% more Germany-born people were recorded in 2001 than in 1991, probably due to the return of British forces stationed there. 4 of the top five clusters are near army bases with the fifth - Richmond in west London - the only one thought to mainly consist of German nationals. 700 Germany-born people have gone from north London's suburbs mostly an ageing Jewish population that escaped Nazi Europe prior to World War II. |
