Overview

Belgium-born people resident in Britain numbered just over 21,000 at the 2001 census � one of the smaller national complements in the country.

There was a growth in the number of Belgium-born people across all of the country, although the majority are resident in London and the south-east.

Outside the capital, some small clusters of Belgium-born people are found in areas not necessarily associated with high levels of immigration, such as Southampton and the Tyne Bridge area of Newcastle.

Some of the clustering also appears to be related to university towns.

Map on right shows country as if areas with roughly equal populations were the same size. So, densely populated London takes up much more space than sparsely populated Scottish Highlands.

21,498 Belgium-born people were in the UK in 2001 � up almost a third on 1991.

15 of the 20 most popular areas are in the capital, although each has fewer than 200 Belgium-born residents.

0.04% of people in the UK were born in Belgium, the highest concentration being 0.09% in London.

257 Belgium-born people were living in Kensington in 2001, the largest complement of any area but still less than 0.5% of the total local population.
