Overview

Britain's Afghanistan community is firmly rooted in the capital, predominantly in its western boroughs.

It has developed over more than 20 years as war and conflict has contributed to one of the world's longest-running refugee crises.

The picture has changed substantially since the 2001 Census, taken before the events of 9/11, the subsequent US military intervention in Afghanistan and the downfall of the ruling Taleban.

Outside London, Afghan populations are so small they barely register; Wales recorded just 25 Afghan-born people in 2001. Overall, they comprise 0.03% of the national population.
