A young boy travelling in the red Ford Sierra was seriously injured.

The accident happened at around 1600 GMT on Sunday.

Firefighters attending the scene used cutting equipment to free people from the wreckage.

The air ambulance was used to take the eight-year-old boy to Morriston Hospital, Swansea, where he is in a stable condition with multiple injuries.

The three people who died are believed to be from the Brecon area.

They have been identified, but will not be named until relatives have been informed.

The lorry driver was not injured but was treated for shock.

Acting Inspector John Tatton, of Dyfed-Powys Police said: "As far as we can understand, a red vehicle was travelling towards Brecon where it appears to have lost control and hit an articulated lorry."

The A470 was closed for six hours after the crash.

Police added that the cause of the accident was being investigated and they are appealing for witnesses.
