The woman had to be cut free by firemen following the accident at Llangoed Hall Hotel, Llyswen and died soon after reaching Hereford General Hospital. She hasn't yet been named.

Former police chief admits deception

A former south Wales police superintendent has admitted dishonestly obtaining money from the police force.

Alan Bolton, 53, admitted two offences of using a false receipt to obtain �500 and �604 from Gwent Police in June 1997.

Sentence on Bolton, who now lives in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, will take place next Friday at York Crown Court.

Gwent Police confirmed that Bolton is presently suspended from the force, and that disciplinary proceedings would be considered after he is sentenced.

Refugee jailed for sex assault

A political refugee was jailed for eight years at Cardiff Crown Court for a sex attack on a lone woman.

Hitcham Harakat, 26, who was allowed in Britain claiming political asylum from Algeria pounced on the 34-year-old mother-of-four as she walked home from a night out with friends in Newport.

He attempted to rape her and fractured her jaw during a "vile and violent attack".

A jury took five hours to find Harakat, of Roath, Cardiff, guilty of attempted rape and grievous bodily harm with intent.

Judge Michael Gibbon QC told him: "When you are finally released from prison the Home Office intend to deport you."

Police investigating the Clydach murders are widening their house to house inquiries into the deaths of Doris Dawson, her daughter Mandy and her two children.

Officers have talked to more than 1,200 people since the murders in Kelvin Road nearly a month ago.

A second, independent post mortem examinations of the bodies will be carried out next week.
