Minibus inquest hears speed killed

The driver of a minibus, which crashed killing five people in west Wales, had been in a hurry to get home to watch a football match, one of the passengers told an inquest into their deaths on Thursday.

Paul Blackmore was one of seven Llanybydder abattoir workers who were in the minibus which hit a lorry near the village of Llanfihangel-ar-Arth in Carmarthenshire last February.

A coroner in Camarthen recorded a verdict of accidental death on the men who died in the crash.

A crash investigator from Dyfed Powys police concluded that the minibus speed caused the accident.

The five workers were killed as they returned home from a 12 hour meet packing shift at Oriel Jones abattoir in Llanybydder.

They were Philip Turner, 23, from Briton Ferry; Martin Turner, 25, from Neath; Ian Richard Nettle, 46, from Morriston; Alan Jonathan Dayman, 24, from Pontardawe, and Darren John Summers, 35, from Pencader.

The driver of the minibus was among the people who died in the incident.

Other witnesses at the inquest said the minibus appeared to lose control and came around a bend broadside before hitting the lorry, which was carrying cattle feed.

'Tragic' and 'Terrible'

The inquest also heard the vehicle had been involved in an accident with a parked car in the same spot exactly two months before the fatal crash.

Carmarthen coroner John Owen described it as "a tragic and terrible incident."

After the crash accident investigators spent several hours examining the scene of the crash on the B4336.

One of the police officers described the scene as "complete carnage".

The white, 16-seat Ford Transit minibus is believed to have caught fire as a result of the collision.

The driver of the 25-ton yellow lorry was not seriously injured in the accident, but was said to be suffering from shock.

Inspector Hywel Davies, Dyfed Powys Police described the accident scene as one of the most traumatic his officers had attended.

He said: "It is complete carnage. You're dealing with five dead in one accident here.

It's very, very distressing indeed."
