| Friday, 3 January, 2003, 12:26 GMT Double celebration after New Year births ![]() The family now has more reasons to celebrate New Year A woman who went to a south Wales hospital to see her newly-born nephew on New Year's Eve ended up staying after going into labour. Nicola Thomas, 31, was eight months pregnant when she went to see her brother's baby Ryan at Singleton Hospital in Swansea.
But within minutes she was lying in the maternity ward opposite her brother's girlfriend Bethan Davies. Ms Thomas, who runs the Plough and Harrow pub in Llangyfelach, Swansea, gave birth at 0324 GMT on New Year's Day. "I came here at 1600 GMT on New Year's Eve, but didn't get to see Ryan then," she said. "I was told to stay by doctors - next thing I knew I was having a baby myself. "It's been a real family occasion this new year," she added. Family joy Ms Thomas and her boyfriend Neil Isaac have not yet decided on a name for their 6lb 10oz son. Her brother Richard Thomas, 22, said the births were great news for the family. "It looks like we'll be having a double celebration every new year now," he said.
His son Ryan, weighing 6lb 9oz, had been born at 1410 GMT on New Year's Eve. The arrivals have also delighted Mr Thomas's mother Hazel, who said the New Year had been "wonderful". Ms Thomas, 50, now has six grandchildren. "It has certainly been a New Year to remember," she said. "I didn't even have time for a drink to celebrate but it is wonderful. "I'm a really proud gran," she added. | See also: 28 Dec 02 | Wales 28 Oct 02 | Health 15 Jul 02 | Health 22 Feb 02 | Health 19 Feb 02 | Wales Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
