She was one of five shortlisted candidates selected by a panel of experts in recognition of their dedicated work in the health service in Wales.

On the programme, friends, colleagues and patients described her as the guiding light behind the pioneering unit for the care of chemotherapy patients at Singleton.

The unit was designed by Anwen to be "non-clinical, non-threatening, so that people fom all over south west Wales felt normal, at ease and able to relax while being treated".

Fundraising efforts

She was instrumental in raising nearly 1m in charitable donations to make her vision a reality.

On receiving the award, Anwen said: "Thank you to all who voted for me but also thanks to all the other NHS workers, who also deserve praise for the great work they do, day in day out".

The chairman of the Welsh NHS Confederation and the BBC Wales NHS Heroes Selection Panel Hugh Thomas said: "It was a wonderful evening in which we paid credit to all the people who work in the NHS.

"Anwen was the winner on the night but really there were no losers and I genuinely felt humbled by the whole experience".

National finalist

She now goes on to represent Wales in the UK final in London on Wednesday.

It will be broadcast as part of Your NHS, a full day of BBC television, radio and online coverage dedicated to the health service.

The other shortlisted candidates in Wales were:

  • Jackie Field, a community children's continuing care nurse for Caerphilly Borough;

  • Dr Kay Saunders, a GP in the Grangetown and Butetown areas of Cardiff;

  • Iona Davies, a chef, North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre at Glan Clwyd Hospital;
