A British student who was injured in a suicide bombing has died, hospital officials in Israel have confirmed.

Medical student Yoni Jesner, 19, from Glasgow, suffered serious head injuries in the blast which killed six other people, including the Palestinian bomber, in Tel Aviv on Thursday.

A spokeswoman for the Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv confirmed that Mr Jesner had shown no signs of recovery and his parents had consented to his life support machine being turned off.

Mr Jesner and his cousin, Gideon Black, 18, from London, were on a bus when a Palestinian bomber boarded and detonated a bomb.

The dead teenager's mother Marsha Gladstone and grandmother had left Scotland on Thursday night to join his father at the hospital.

Mr Black was among more than 50 people injured in the blast.

Senior Rabbi Avrohom Weiss, a close friend of the family, said: "People here are shattered by the news but unfortunately the Jewish nation is very hardened to these events over a number of years.

"The Glasgow Jewish community is very close and look to these things to bring us together."

The blast happened as the bus drove along Allenby Street, a shopping and restaurant district, at lunchtime on Thursday.

The teenager's former school, Calderwood Lodge Jewish Primary in East Renfrewshire, held a special assembly to remember Mr Jesner.

Headteacher Ruth Levey said pupils and staff were praying for the victim and his family.

She said: "Yoni was a popular and well-liked pupil during his years with us.

"After he left he grew into a gifted and talented youth leader who won the respect and affection of all.

"Yoni was greatly admired by both young people and adults alike and his loss will be keenly felt throughout the Jewish and wider local community."

Yoni's mother teaches at the school and his younger sister is a pupil.

A funeral for the dead teenager has taken in place in Jerusalem.
