A 106-year-old football programme from a Scotland versus England clash has sold for �6,240.

The rare piece of memorabilia commemorates the "Auld Enemy's" clash at Crystal Palace in 1897.

The official programme was one of a number of items from north of the border sold at Sotheby's annual football sale in London.

A spokeswoman for Sotheby's said the Scottish items for sale proved extremely popular.

A pair of Rivaldo's boots sold for �1,200

The programme outsold a pair of boots signed by Brazilian captain Cafu, which were expected to raise �3,000 but were sold for �1,320.

It also outperformed a pair of signed boots from AC Milan star Rivaldo which sold for �1,200.

Scotland shirts worn by Ian St John and Billy McNeill also went under the hammer.

Winners' medal

The former Liverpool hero's shirt fetched �576 and Celtic's 1967 European Cup-winning captain McNeill's sold for �480.

However, two Celtic tops worn by former goalkeeper Pat Bonner, worth �800 and a Rangers 1981 Scottish Cup final top, failed to sell.

A number of Scottish League Championship medals belonging to former Rangers and Aberdeen star James Forrest proved more popular.

Mr Forrest's medal for the 1964-5 season, when Rangers won the league, sold for �600 and his 1969-70 Scottish FA Cup Winners' medal from Aberdeen's 3-1 victory over Celtic fetched �840.

'Great interest'

Celtic memorabilia, including a mug and rug commemorating the team's 1967 European Cup victory in Lisbon, sold for �505.

And an unofficial Scotland international cap presented by Celtic to Jimmy "Napoleon" McMenemy for his appearance in the 1919 Victory International against England sold for �600.

Caps were not traditionally given to players taking part in the unofficial Victory International fixtures, which were staged at the end of the First World War.

A spokeswoman for Sotheby's said: "There was a great deal of interest in some of the Scottish items, some of which were very rare indeed."
