Neighbourhood wardens will patrol Scotland's streets in a new approach to tackling crime in communities.

The Scottish Executive said the wardens will provide a visible presence in deprived communities and will provide a new point of contact for local people.

It has been pointed out that while the wardens' presence is intended to discourage nuisance crime, they will have no law enforcement powers.

Warden schemes have already been set up in some cities in England, including London and Hull.

Up to 50 schemes will be set up, according to Social Justice Minister Margaret Curran, who said the initiative is part of a �30m plan to provide "new approaches to neighbourhood management".

The minister told a conference in Aberdeen: "No child should grow up in a community where the streets and play areas are scarred by litter, graffiti and neglect.

"No family should have to live in a neighbourhood where vandals and hooligans roam unchecked.

"That is why we are investing in a network of neighbourhood wardens.

"We are determined that every community should be well maintained, safe and secure."

The minister also announced plans to spend an additional �20m on helping people in deprived communities into work by ensuring they get help with child care.

She said �10m has been earmarked to provide central heating for people over 80.
