A reservoir which was sealed off after a public health scare has been given the all-clear by water experts.

Scottish Water said it had been given approval to resume using mains water from the Mugdock reservoir, near Milngavie, in the north of Glasgow.

The all-clear came from an incident control team who found that levels of cryptosporidium had fallen.

It said levels of the bacteria were continuing to stay below safety levels which triggered a four-day public alert earlier this month in which 150,000 people in Glasgow and Clydebank were told to boil their tap water.

The parasite can cause diarrhoea, sickness, stomach cramps and a slight fever.

Dr Jim McMenamin, chairman of the incident control team, said: "I am pleased to see that test results from treated mains water samples from the Mugdock Reservoir now show cryptosporidium levels are normal and have remained so over the past five days.

"Scottish Water has, as a consequence, been given permission to reintroduce this water into the mains supply."

The water authority said the decision would allow Scottish Water to re-establish normal distribution of water supplies to the city.

"The temporary arrangements to supply Greater Glasgow with water from the Craigmaddie reservoir placed the mains supply under severe strain," said Scottish Water's general operations manager Peter Farrar.

But he warned it could take up to a week to fully reconnect Mugdock to the Glasgow distribution system, and said that during this time there could be pressure fluctuations, slight discoloration or a slight chlorine taste.
